Give Thanks

Because this is obviously the day we honor our sexy pilgrim ancestors who fled from Native Americans in their stockings and high heels.

Per tradition, I'm making my annual pilgrimage to Florida to spend the next few days basking in the sun and generally trying to forget that I live in a cold climate.

In the interest of brevity (and so I don't sound like a broken record year after year), I will refer you to this post and this post, which really do a nice job summing up some of the more important aspects of life I'm thankful for. But I'd be remiss to let a Thanksgiving pass by without mentioning a few new ones (or at least some of the same ones that bear repeating). I am indescribably grateful for my family and friends, all of you wonderful readers out there, 21 Jump Street - the movie not the show, and this awesome veggie meatloaf recipe, which by the way, is a damn delicious alternative to turkey.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

DIY Vintage Infinity Scarf

A few years ago I inherited a whole bunch of beautiful vintage scarves and kerchiefs from my grandma. (She was a stylish lady, that one - had an entire dresser drawer full of them, I kid you not). I made this one out of two of my favorites and it's been a staple in my wardrobe ever since. I love wearing it - it's light and airy and one-of-a-kind, and can even fool you into thinking that a tank top and jorts look kind of fancy.

Lately I've gotten so many compliments on it that I thought it might be time to share the secret of its construction with you. Note: that was sarcastic. This DIY is so ridiculously easy I almost feel silly explaining it.

1. Gather your supplies.  You'll need just 3 things:
  • sewing apparatus (machine or manual)
  • pins
  • at least 2 scarves/kerchiefs you want to use (the more you use, the longer your scarf will be). If they're the same width at the ends, great! If not, don't worry; I promise you won't see it in the end.
(1 ½.) As you can see, these two are different widths. That's ok.  By definition infinity scarves are bunched and folded and messy and therefore wonderful at hiding flaws and imperfections. No one will notice*.
2. Line the ends of the scarves up together with the outsides facing in.  If one is shorter than the other, just try to center it as well as possible.
3. Pin the scarves together so they don't wiggle around when you sew them.
4. Sew the ends together.  Repeat the same process for the other side.  Voila.  Your two scarves have just become one.
5. Loop it around your neck and rock it.

*Unless you completely forget to make any attempt to hide those flaws....like all of the white stitching you just did, for instance.

I'm pretty sure every year around this time I start complaining about how the cold weather and end of daylight savings make taking good outfit photos just that much harder. So this year I'll spare you the spiel, and just say that I didn't take any outfit photos this week or last. But I found these ones from back in April that I never posted for some reason, and figured that what I wore when it was chilly then looks kind of like something I'd wear when it's chilly now. And my guess is that if I didn't tell you these were from over half a year ago, you probably wouldn't have guessed it, anyway. I'm tricky like that.

Favorite Fashion Friday #71

 photo FavoriteFashionFridaylogo_zpsf66ade9e.jpg

I am kind of crazy over this outfit from Kiss Me Darling.  The faux leather dress is just fantastic on its own, but throw in some rust colored tights and entire coat of leopard print, and I am beyond sold.

One Dress, Two Ways

One of my favorite parts about getting dressed is remixing the clothes I already have. I find the challenge of coming up with new ways to wear the same things really rewarding; it sparks my creativity and forces me to try new combinations that I otherwise might not have thought of. Plus, it's pretty easy on the wallet, too. I'm proud to say that since I started this blog over three years ago, I've only repeated outfits a handful of times (it's usually when I wear something and don't document it for the blog, so I feel entitled to wear it again. I'm a crazy person, right?).

Anyway.

I hadn't worn this dress in over a year, and never in cooler weather, so I decided to take her out for a spin and remix her two different ways for fall. In this first outfit, my legs stayed nice and warm with the help of my kushyfoot tights. I love their opacity and texture, but I have to admit that when I realized they were control top I was totally turned off. I loathe control top. But  miracle of miracles, they didn't squeeze the life out of me. I can honestly say that this is the first pair of control-top tights I've worn that are actually comfortable. Pain-free control top tights exist.  Who knew?

I love how a simple change of jacket and shoes can transform an outfit into something entirely different. I wore this back when it was still slightly warm enough for bare legs. But even so, I wore fleece-lined trouser socks with my boots, and I was cozy all the way up to my shins. These babies will really come in handy during winter. A lot of my boots require thin socks, which usually leave my feet freezing cold. This pair is thin yet still cozy and fleecey. I don't even know how that's possible, but I'm so glad I found them.

The sweet people at kushyfoot also sent me a pair of emergency flats like such:

I brought these on my recent vacation to Las Vegas, and they were an absolute lifesaver. Or for the less dramatic, a foot-&-toe-saver. If you've ever been, then you know that there is a lot of walking to do, yet high heels look very nice at the club. I have no shame carrying my heels with me all the way from the hotel to the bouncer, awkwardly putting them on while standing in line to get in. Then folded up and into my clutch the flats go, to be taken out again when it's time to stumble on home.  #Classy.

Favorite Fashion Friday #70

 photo FavoriteFashionFridaylogo_zpsf66ade9e.jpg

Hi everyone!  I'm back from vacation (pictures coming soon, promise).  I don't have a favorite outfit this week because I wasn't here to see any of them.  So instead I'll just leave you with a low quality iPhone photo of my Halloween costume, taken in horrible lighting at a club with a random (but sweet) Snow White, only a week after Halloween ended.  Is it strange to put myself up here instead of one of you?  Probably.  But look at me; I do what I want!
